Everyday History

A perfect combination of Ghare-Baire (The Home & the World) in this photograph, a blend of traditional and the liberal. The three generations of an urban Bengali middle class household depicted in this picture reflect multiple narratives of the Indian society. It was at that point of time when one half of Calcutta was grappling with the issue of immigration, while the other half was steadily pursuing its aspiration.

A great divide existed in the society, thanks to education and financial freedom, interestingly captured in this picture. Veiled in tradition, a few of the womenfolk held ground and managed the household, while the unveiled ones, displaying a confident body language crossed the seven seas to pursue their dreams.

The scenario remains pretty much the same in 2015.
